Abstract
In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), debates about the nature and role of women, as well as the relationship between men and women within marriage, family, and society, emerged as significant focal points in public discussions concerning religion, modernity, and civilizational progress from the late 19th century onward. At the same time, gender relations were increasingly turned into sites of political, legal, and scientific interventions. This is the backdrop for debates on Islamic normativity drawing on strictly binary notions of sexual difference in arguing for the superiority of Islam as a model of comprehensive societal order. The lecture looks into shifting notions of sex and gender in Islamic debates exploring the evolving avenues for critical engagement by women Islamic intellectuals since the 1950s.
Short bio
Bettina Dennerlein is Full Professor of Gender Studies and Islamic Studies at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, University of Zurich. Her research covers issues of Islamic family law, feminism, contemporary politics of gender as well as modern Islamic thought and reform in the Arab speaking region. Among her recent publications are “The Gender of Sainthood. Moroccan Hagiography at the End of the 19th Century”, in : Hespéris-Tamuda, 1 (2021), “Islamic Sentiments and the Decolonization of ‘Woman’”, in : F. Berndt, I. Karremann, K. Müller-Wille (eds.)
